Morecambe "Catch the Wind" Kite Festival

Welcome to the Morecambe Kite Festival web page.

History

The Morecambe kite festival is now in its 7th year. First started in 2002 the kiting side of the event was run by the Flying Circus display team. Following the break up of the group two years later I took on the task of bringing the kiters together to put on a display. The festival is organised by More Music and kiters from across the UK attend to make this one of the most liveliest events in the town each year. Tens of thousands of people flock to the promanade to see the weird and wonderful kites on display. There is also music, street performers, markets and food stalls to entertain the public.

More Music

More Music is a community music organisation based in the seaside town of Morecambe in the North West.Established in 1993 More Music works throughout Lancashire and beyond providing a year round series of projects that cover a breadth of musical activity involving people of all ages, abilities, cultures and backgrounds. We run workshops, professional training, community festivals, live music nights, and a programme of classes that includes guitar, hand drumming and singing. We also manage the Lancashire Youth Music Action Zone for Youth Music, who fund and facilitate music- making for young people up to the age of 18, particularly those living in areas of social and economic need.

In addition, More Music works with local schools and centres throughout the district, the county and the North West delivering Sing Up- the Music Manifesto’s National Singing Programme.

The kites

Most of the kites flown at the event are large show kites. The beach is very narrow but the onshore winds are perfect for flying these kites so close to the crowds.
